Chicago, one of the largest U.S. cities, is in the state of Illinois. The city has a population of nearly three million people and is the third most populous city in the USA. The Chicago Metropolitan area is informally known as Chicagoland. Chicago is situated along the SW shore of Lake Michigan and is a prime center of transportation, culture, finance, medicine and higher education. Chicago is also informally called the Windy City due to the heavy breezes coming off Lake Michigan.

Chicago was founded in 1833 as a town linking the Great Lakes to the Mississippi River system. It later became a main transportation hub of the Northwest Territory, with connections by steamboats, canals, and railroads. By 1890, Chicago was considered one of the top ten most influential cities in the world.

Chicago hosts national sports teams including MLB's Cubs and White Sox, who won the world series in 2005. The Chicago Football Bears made it to Super Bowl XLI in 2007, but fell just short of a world title. The Chicago Bulls were the NBA's powerhouse for many years featuring superstars Michael Jordan and Scotty Pippen. The Chicago Blackhawks are one of the oldest National Hockey League franchises.
